Arne Jacobsen designed the St Catherine bench in 1935 for the villa of wholesaler Helge Wandel. When he designed St Catherine College in Oxford in the late 1950s, he put the bench into the plan for the college park. Jacobsen loved botany and is said to have remarked that in a second life he would be a gardener. Natural oils protect the wood from rot and insects. In sun and rain it turns a fine silver-grey over time. Sika-Design uses plantation-grown Indonesian teak with the Legal Wood stamp, which ensures sustainable production.
